The Making of a My Little Airport Music Video

My Little Airport is the impossibly cute Hong Kong indie band, founded by songwriter Ah P and vocalist Nicole. Their music is twee, their aesthetic coy, and their live shows are happy, clappy affairs. Quaint keyboards and lightweight call-and-response ditties about “toddling” in the zoo and forbidden romances are their calling cards. Since 2004 they have released 3 albums to much acclaim from the comfort and privacy of their own homes. The elusive, anti-tech My Little Airport seldom play live, but every time they do it is a wondrous full band affair.

We at Cowrice have been MLA’s fans, friends and collaborators for years. Our last collaboration was in June 2008 when we made the MV for “A certain romance in Kowloon Tong” after the release of their 3rd album, “We can’t stop smoking in the vicious and blue summer”(2007). They gave us a great deal of creative freedom to use our signature style, an obscure visual look that accents the low-profile aesthetic and subtle lo-fi feel of their music. Grace from Cowrice managed the illustrations and Philip handled the concept and video production. The MV has been viewed over 100 thousands times and won considerable praise.

My Little Airport tentatively plans to release their 4th album this October, and they’ve again invited us to make another MV. This album is heavier with a more political flavor, but the leading track is a romantic, realistic and inspirational song called “the more you’re MK, the more I’m OK”. It has a beautiful melody and straightforward lyrics that tell the story of an office romance. We began discussing the MV with Ah P, to get on the same page about the content. He hopes the MV will become the sequel of “…..romance in Kowloon Tong”.

We believe that to produce an MV, we must first understand the musician’s personality, this helps us match the image to the sound they create. MLA’s Ah P is a simple, low-profile man, slightly boastful with unsociable appearance and a humorous side. His personality is very similar to ours here at Cowrice, so our styles fit well together. We decided to go for a cute, culty feel for the MV using lo-fi yellow 8mm backgrounds, coupled again with Grace’s illustrations, Philip’s animation, the obscure story of the song and the vague gender of the lead character(the fridge in the employee lounge).
