Sounds from the Bedroom

SINGAPORE – “There are pro and cons to working out of my bedroom, obviously, but I love the fact that I’ll never be late for work and I can work whenever I want to. It sure as hell beats working a day job at the bank,” muses Roland Lim, who houses tons of professional gear that can rival many professional studios in Singapore.

The 23-year old producer/sound engineer/composer/multiinstrumentalist operates a home studio out of his east Singapore bedroom, where he has been recording and producing the new wave of young bands to hit the local music scene. With his keen ear and flair of capturing the very essence of artists, Roland is responsible for the polished and professional sound of many independent bands in various genres: be it indie rock (Trella, Audiocean), the brutal sound of metal-core (For Better Endings) or the warmth and depth of singer/songwriters (For This Cycle, Nicholas Chim of Vertical Rush).

“I would really like to see an improvement in the standard of quality and meet more driven people with the right attitude,” says Roland on the growth of the local music scene. “There’s a stigma that anything local is considered ‘cheap,’ which certainly isn’t the case. Bands should be prepared, well-rehearsed and invested enough to pay for top work rather than finding the cheapest alternative to represent their sound.”

For Roland, it is a combination of love and passion for the art of producing/sound engineering that fuels his quest of doing music full-time. “Music is an expression of my personality and soul. The main driving factor for me is to produce albums that people will enjoy and talk about for the rest of their lives. Knowing that I’ve made a change or given people the belief to follow their dreams and passion for music is definitely an added bonus.”
